On the left anterior negativity (LAN): The case of morphosyntactic agreement: a reply to Tanner et al.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Molinaro, Barber, and Carreiras (2011) have proposed that the multidimensional linguistic nature of grammatical agreement can map onto specific modulations of early negativities around 300e400 msec [left anterior negativity (LAN)/N400] as well as the later P600. Tanner (2014) criticizes the reliability of the LAN as an ERP marker for studying grammatical agreement processing. We thank Tanner for his interest in our proposal and in this reply we consider separately four main arguments in this debate.

The Interaction of Morphosyntactic and Semantic Processing in Japanese Sentence Comprehension: Evidence from Event-Related Brain Potentials
The present study examined event-related brain potential (ERP) responses to apparent Case-assignment violations to explore how morphosyntactic and semantic processing interact with each other during Japanese sentence comprehension. Consistent with previous studies on Case-assignment violation, the present results found that a Case-assignment violation elicited a left anterior negativity (LAN), ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Proficiency on Syntactic Second-language Processing of German and Italian: Evidence from Event-related Potentials
The present study investigated the role of proficiency in late second-language (L2) processing using comparable stimuli in German and Italian. Both sets of stimuli consisted of simple active sentences including a word category violation, a morphosyntactic agreement violation, or a combination of the two. Four experiments were conducted to study high- and low-proficiency L2 learners of German as...
متن کاملERPs reveal individual differences in morphosyntactic processing.
We investigated individual differences in the neural substrates of morphosyntactic processing among monolingual English speakers using event-related potentials (ERPs). Although grand-mean analysis showed a biphasic LAN-P600 pattern to grammatical violations, analysis of individuals׳ ERP responses showed that brain responses varied systematically along a continuum between negativity- and positiv...
متن کاملSubliminal Emotional Words Impact Syntactic Processing: Evidence from Performance and Event-Related Brain Potentials
Recent studies demonstrate that syntactic processing can be affected by emotional information and that subliminal emotional information can also affect cognitive processes. In this study, we explore whether unconscious emotional information may also impact syntactic processing. In an Event-Related brain Potential (ERP) study, positive, neutral and negative subliminal adjectives were inserted wi...
متن کاملMental lexicon and derivational rules.
Lexical decision task in an event-related potential experiment was used in order to determine the organization of mental lexicon regarding the polimorphemic words: are they stored as unanalyzable items or as separate morphemes? The results indicate the later: while monomorphemic words elicit N400 component, usually related to lexical-semantic processing, prefixed words and prefixed pseudo-words...
